Attendance
Students are expected to treat the Arizona Opportunities Industrialization
Center classroom as a job site, with the same attention paid to attendance. Instructors
refer to students’ work records as part of their referrals to employers.
A student absent from class more than ten percent of the time, who has
excessive tardy reports or three absences without contacting the instructor, will be
withdrawn from class but will be awarded a certificate for the highest level of competencies
achieved to that point. Re-entry, if approved, would include a plan of action to
correct the attendance or tardiness, and probation.
Dress Code
The Arizona Opportunities Center requires students to dress appropriately
and safely for their environment: work boots, long sleeves, no loose clothing where it
would be a hazard, uniforms when working in the health care setting; business outfits in
an office setting.
Standards of Progress
Students are evaluated by how well they can perform the skills needed
for their certificate, rather than given grades, at the Arizona Opportunities
Industrialization Center. They’re considered to be making satisfactory progress
toward completion of their program if they are achieving the specified competencies at a
reasonable pace in line with student averages.
Being punctual and having good attendance is part of the performance
criteria.
Students who, within the first two months of class are making below
average progress, with a poor likelihood of employability in the field, will be
counseled. When appropriate, students can transfer to another program with documentation
from the sending and receiving instructors, counselor and sponsor, if needed.
Student Conduct
Students are expected to follow OIC attendance and satisfactory progress
policies, as well as to develop work ethic and other skills outlined below.
Disciplinary action will be taken against persons who violate the standards listed,
or state and federal laws. Students, staff and visitors are expected to treat the
learning environment as a job site and to show respect for others and property at all
times.
Competency Lists Each course description has a list of the skills
or “competencies” included in the training for each certificate. These are available from
the instructor, counselor or administration.
Graduation All students who complete the required competencies
for a level of training will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Lifelong Learning Arizona OIC is committed to the philosophy of
“lifelong learning” and encourages students to learn entry-level skills, and to develop
the ability and desire to expand on these skills throughout their lives.
Work Ethic Requirements for completion of an Arizona OIC
certificate include items of skills, knowledge and work ethic. Work ethic includes
attendance, punctuality, and the ability to follow instructions, observe the work rules,
work with others, work when unsupervised, and complete a job on time.
School Hours Arizona OIC students are expected to attend scheduled
classes from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday; except for holidays; unless other
arrangements have been discussed and approved by the instructor and counselor.
Disciplinary Standards The Governing Board and its
agents—administration and faculty—are granted legal authority to regulate student
life subject to the basic standards of reasonableness.
In developing responsible student conduct, the Arizona Opportunities
Industrialization Center prefers counseling, guidance, admonition and example.
However, when these fail to resolve problems of student conduct and responsibility,
appropriate disciplinary procedures will be followed:
Misconduct for which students are subject to disciplinary action fall
into the following general areas:
- Cheating on an examination, laboratory work, written work (plagiarism):
falsifying, forging or altering college records.
- Action or verbal statements which threaten the personal safety of any instructor,
staff, student or others lawfully assembled in the facility, or any conduct which is
harmful, obstructive, disruptive to or interferes with the educational process or
institutional functions.
- Violation of Arizona statutes, and/or Center regulations and policies.
An instructor may remove a student from class meetings for disciplinary
reasons. If an instructor removes a student from more than one class period, the instructor
shall notify the appropriate administrator in writing of the problem, action taken by the
instructor, and the instructor’s recommendation. If a resolution of the problem is not
reached, the student may be removed permanently pursuant to appropriate due process
procedures.
Student Records
The right to inspect and review educational records and the release of,
or access to such records, other information or instructional materials, is governed by
federal law and federal regulations.
Students wanting access to their records must (1) complete a written
request specifying which records they require (2) pay for the cost of reproducing any
materials from their files. Information will be provided within 45 days or less.
Students may have access to their “educational records.” These records
include all information maintained by the Center which is directly related to the student
with the exception of (a) recommendations associated with admissions, employment or job
placement to which students have waived rights of inspection and review (b) educational
records containing information about more than one student. However, in such cases the
institution must permit access to that part of the record which pertains only to the
inquiring student.
Students shall not have access to the following records:
(a) reports made by physicians, psychiatrists, or psychologists in connection with
their treatment, (b) records of instructional, supervisory, administrative and
certain educational personnel which are in the sole possession of the originator.
Career Services
Arizona OIC students work with the Learning Opportunities
Center to polish their job application, resume and interviewing skills before graduation.
Accredation
The Arizona Opportunities Industrialization Center is accredited by the
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Access for Persons with Disabilities
OIC staff welcomes all students. The back entrance is wheel-chair
accessible and leads into a wide hall which is easily entered by wheel-chair bound students.
Affirmative Action Statement
To the extent required by law, the Arizona Opportunities Industrialization Center
will employ the concepts of Affirmative Action in the recruitment, hiring, and promotion of
employees.
Equal Opportunity Statement
The Arizona Opportunities Industrialization Center does not
discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation,
age, handicap/disability, or Vietnam era/disabled veteran status in employment or in the
application, admission, participation, access and treatment of persons in the instructional
programs and activities.
Health Concerns
The Arizona Opportunities Industrialization Center is
committed to providing an educational environment consistent with district policies,
free from unlawful acts and free from problems associated with the unauthorized use and
abuse of alcohol and drugs. Accordingly, the Arizona Opportunities Industrialization
Center supports the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989
(Public Law 101-226).
A variety of alcohol and other drug abuse prevention efforts occur at
the Opportunities Industrialization Center throughout the year to educate students
to the health risks associated with use and abuse. Intervention information and
services exist both on site and off site to help students overcome dependencies.
Neither a diagnosis of AIDS or a positive HIV antibody test will be part
of the initial admission decision for those applying to attend the Arizona Opportunities
Industrialization Center.
Under most circumstances, students who have AIDS or a positive HIV antibody
test, whether they are symptomatic or not, will be allowed regular classroom attendance
provided they are physically or mentally able.
Additional information about health risks, programs available and the
center’s drug policy may be obtained from a counselor, administrator and/or the
S.A.L.T. Coalition, housed at the facility.
Nondiscrimination Policy
The Arizona Opportunities Industrialization Center does not unlawfully
discriminate on the bases of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, (including
sexual harassment and pregnancy), handicap/disability, age, disabled or Vietnam era
veteran status in any of its policies, or practices in compliance with Titles VI and
VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended; the Civil Rights Act of 1991; Title
IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972; Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation
Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act; the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment
Act of 1974 as amended; and the Age Discrimination Act of 1975. This nondiscrimination
policy covers all aspects of the employment relationship and admission, to access to, and
treatment of students in the Arizona Opportunities Industrialization Center and activities
including vocational education. This policy also prohibits discrimination on the basis of
sexual orientation in the admission and treatment of students and in the hiring, treatment,
promotion, evaluation and termination of employees.
Sexual Harassment Statement for Employees and Students
The policy of the Arizona Opportunities Industrialization Center is to
provide an educational, employment and business environment free of unwelcome sexual
favors, and other verbal and/or physical conduct or communications constituting sexual
harassment as defined and otherwise prohibited by local, state and federal law.
Sexual harassment by and between employees, students, employees and students, and
center visitors and students or employees is prohibited by this policy. Violations
of this policy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of
employees, sanctions up to and including suspension or expulsion for students, and
appropriate sanctions against campus visitors. This policy is subject to constitutionally
protected speech rights and principles of academic freedom. Questions about this policy
may be directed to the Administrative Office.
Tobacco Free Environment
Smoking is prohibited inside the Arizona Opportunities Industrialization
Center and directly in front of building entrances.
Grievance Procedures
Arizona OIC students can report all class related
difficulties to their immediate instructor. If not resolved at this level, the
student must then follow the chain of command to try and resolve issues: Counselor,
Workforce Development Coordinator, Administrator, President/CEO, WIA, etc.

ethical values and devotion to lifelong learning. We accept the responsibility and
