Summer youth work experience program

For more than twenty-three years, Arizona OIC has effectively organized and implemented the Summer Youth Work Experience Program, which serves eligible youth, ages 14-21, who reside in the City of Phoenix. Services have been provided to more than 9,250 economically disadvantaged youth via this program. Through the SYWEP activity, we have provided youth a wide range of work experience opportunities, educational enrichment sessions and exposure to career fields that offer opportunities for advancement. Additionally, We have successfully piloted Academic Enrichment Projects (Cultural Arts Component, Artworks, Science / Math / Computer Enhancement Program) that have afforded youth with the opportunity to be actively engaged in the learning process through a combination of hands-on work experience and academic training.

Productive linkages and partnerships have been developed with local government agencies, non-profit organizations, health care institutions, educational institutions, arts organizations and programs serving target populations. This experience has enabled Arizona OIC to meet the needs of a wide range of youth to continually expand and improve our services.

What is Job Placement Services All About?

Arizona OIC’s main objective is to assist you with identifying, obtaining, and maintaining employment. You will meet with a qualified employment specialist who can assist you with your specific job seeking needs. Our staff are available to provide you with any or all of the following, based on your needs and desires:

Job Seeking Skills

Once you have an employment focus, participating in job seeking skills training can be very beneficial to you if you have been out of work for a long period of time or just need a refresher on the process of searching for a job.

Job seeking skills training can involve:

  • Preparing a resume
  • Learning and/or practicing interviewing skills
  • Problem solving strategies/options for handling your specific disability issues
  • Job Development

If you are referred for job development services, you will meet regularly with an Arizona OIC employment specialist who will assist you with your job search. Job development can include assisting you with following up on leads in the newspaper, completing job applications, registering with the state job service, and going on interviews. Arizona OIC staff will assist you with completing a job placement plan designed to meet your specific needs.

    Situational Assessments

Many times people have several areas of interest for employment. If this is your case, and you are not sure which direction to move in, Arizona OIC can provide opportunities for you to explore different options by participating in situational assessments. This involves spending time and actually working at one or more job sites and getting a taste of the job, to see if you are indeed interested. This can be a great way to explore a career path that you are considering, but may not have yet experienced.

The Job Development Center maintains an active job bank that is available to all Arizona OIC graduates.

In addition, the WIA/PWIN Resource Center has two Internet computer terminals for on-line job searches.

Once you are employed, an Arizona OIC staff person will assist you with strategies for maintaining employment, if needed.

We look forward to working with you!
