ROMP
Over twenty-eight years ago, the Arizona OIC initiated a unique
program to attract members of minority groups to law enforcement careers. Today the
project has been expanded to include Fire Department personnel and is a proven
success.
The Reaching Out for Minority Personnel (ROMP) program consists of
three phases:
A campaign to make community members aware that there is a need for ethnic minority
members and women to represent their interest in the public safety area;
A comprehensive community relations effort involving personal contact by the AZOIC
staff with members of the minority community;
Structured classes designed to assist ethnic minorities and women to prepare for the
academic and physical requirements to enter the Police or Fire Departments.
Classes are provided free of charge and are instructed by AZOIC
staff and members of the Phoenix Fire and Police Departments. The ROMP Project provides
direct exposure to the environment of working personnel in the public safety arena.
