Become a fire fighter

As a member of the Phoenix Fire Department, you will join an organization that has a world renowned reputation. We are one of the finest and most progressive fire departments in the nation. Our training includes fire prevention and suppression, and emergency medical and transportation services. We provide 16 weeks of paid recruit training at our fully equipped Training Academy. We also provide continued education throughout your career and an excellent compensation and benefits package.

While in training, Firefighter Recruits command a highly competitive annual salary in the range of $24,752.00--$26,145.00. Upon graduation from the Training Academy and promotion to Firefighter, the annual salary increases to between $30,016-- $42,459. After completion of the Probationary Period, Firefighters are assigned to a Rescue Company [Ambulance] Personnel unit until such time that they can be replaced.

  • To qualify as a Firefighter Recruit, you must be 18 years of age, be of sound physical and mental health, possess a good driving record, and be able to obtain and maintain a VALID ARIZONA OPERATOR'S LICENSE. Completion of high school or GED and certification as an Emergency Medical Technician are preferred. Applicants must also reside in Maricopa County at the time of application,. As of July 1, 1996, Firefighter Recruits will be required to reside within the Phoenix City limits within 24 months of hire.

    The exam for Firefighter Recruit consists of a two part test. The first part is a 100 question multiple choice test and the second part is a physical performance test.

    WRITTEN TEST - consists of two sections; one section based on the pretest booklet that is given to each applicant when they pick up the application. The other section is based on reading comprehension and basic math. The written test will constitute 100% of applicant's final score.

    PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE TEST - is based on a PASS/FAIL evaluation. A series of seven tasks must be performed within seven minutes and 20 seconds or less. Applicant will perform the tasks wearing a firefighter helmet, turnout coat, glove, and self-contained breathing apparatus. The total weight of protective gear is approximately 45 pounds.

    When preparing for this examination process keep in mind the written portion will constitute 100% of the overall score. Phoenix College, and other Maricopa County Community Colleges, offer classes which will help improve your reading and exam skills. It is recommended that you register for classes.
