Why Arizona?

  • At the end of 2002, a total of 6,475 persons were known to be living with HIV/AIDS in the Phoenix EMA, 2,871 (44.3%) of which had AIDS.

  • The rate for HIV that was reported in 2002 for males was over 8 times that for females (21.3/100,000 compared with 2.6/100,000).

  • In 2002, the rate of HIV reported for black males was over 2.5 times that for white males and for black women the rate was over 8 times that for white women.

  • The HIV rates for black and American Indian men reported in 2002 were higher than those for all other groups (58/100,000 and 29/100,000, respectively) compared with whites 21/100,000 and Hispanics 17/100,000.

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM), including MSM who inject drugs, accounted for over 71% of the cases reported in 2002.

  • The rate for AIDS cases reported in 2002 for males was over 7 times that for females (24.9/100,000 compared with 3.5/100,000). By race/ethnicity, the rates were highest for blacks (50/100,000) compared with American Indians (36/100,000), whites (13/100,000) and Hispanics (13/100,000).
